Internship Opportunities

Media Matters for America is a web-based, not-for-profit progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the media -- every day, in real time.

We are looking for paid interns to work in our Washington, D.C. office who believe in progressive causes. Both full and part-time internships are available for the fall, spring, and summer terms. We are currently recruiting candidates to perform the functions in the following departments:

Communications

  • Assisting with monitoring press coverage

  • Drafting news releases

  • Compiling press clips

  • Conducting online research

  • Assisting with pitching media and managing events

  • Assisting with administrative functions as needed


Research

  • Monitoring radio, television, Internet, and radio outlets

  • Assisting with transcription

  • Writing items/clips as needed

  • Assisting with research


Editorial

  • Conducting fact-checking of Media Matters items

  • Editing transcripts for spelling, factual accuracy, punctuation, style and adherence to video feed

  • Updating and maintaining web-based item scoreboard

  • Writing material for posting on Media Matters website

  • Assisting with administrative functions as needed


Special Projects

  • Assisting with media monitoring

  • Document-based research using Nexis and Internet

  • Data input and research analysis

  • Assisting with writing and editing of reports


Public Affairs

  • Compiling news clips on political/media related topics

  • Maintaining database of information on political campaigns

  • Updating calendar that tracks political candidates

  • Assisting with briefings as needed

  • Assisting with administrative functions/special assignments as needed


Expected Outcomes of Internships

  • Hands-on training working directly with Media Matters staff

  • Gain hands-on experience and awareness of media bias and criticism

  • Understanding of conservative misinformation

  • Enhance skills in the use of research tools and resources

  • Having fun and gaining valuable experience working with a leading progressive, non-profit research and information center


Internship Qualifications

  • Completion of at least sophomore year in college

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Expressed interest in current political issues as well as media criticism

  • Prior communications, campaign, and Internet-based research experience highly desirable

  • Commitment to the organizational mission and ideology of Media Matters for America
